Try a train workshops a great success

The Optalis Supported Employment team have been working with people to become more confident using local train travel, in partnership with Great Western Railway and Southeast Communities Rail Partnership.

John: “For anyone wanting to become more independent I would say give this programme a go”

The team have been sharing practical advice and information, helping people build their confidence and knowledge using trains. During the workshops the team have been helping people understand more about:

  • Planning a journey, reading timetables
  • Buying tickets and accessing the platform
  • Railway safety
  • Problem solving; What to do if things change (e.g. the train is late)
  • Understanding how to navigate around the stations using signage and where to seek help

The groups have provided a range of positive feedback about the sessions so far.

Kathrine: “The experience was good to learn how to be safe”

The Team have made arrangements with the groups to practice train journeys in the summer.

Penelope: “It has helped me understand how to get on a train
Katherine: “I feel less nervous about going on a train”
Gillian: “I learned to know when to go to take the train”
George: “I have travelled previously with help of my parents and now I want to master the skills myself”
