Support When It’s Needed Most

Loddon Court and Allenby Road Short Breaks Service play an important role in supporting families across the boroughs of Wokingham, Windsor and Maidenhead. The service provides Carers with valuable time to rest and recharge, knowing that their family member is well-supported and enjoying their time away.
While most short breaks are planned, there are times when the service is called on to respond quickly. This happens when someone needs urgent support and somewhere safe to stay.
Mirna, Optalis Head of Services in Wokingham Borough, explains how the team responds when an emergency arises: “Sometimes the team might get a call on a Friday late afternoon, explaining that someone needs urgent support. It warms the heart to see how the whole team pulls together in these moments.”
“When this happens, team members often stay late after their shifts finish to make sure the person can settle in. Other staff rearrange their shifts so there is enough support in place. Staff step up without hesitation, working together to make sure no one is left without the care they need.”
The team also liaise with different organisations to gather information that helps them support the person well. They focus on practical details, making sure the person has their possessions where possible, or quickly finding new items if needed. Staff think creatively and flexibly so each person feels comfortable, cared for and respected.
There have been times when the service has already been full. In these situations, the team has spoken to some of their regular visitors to see if they would be happy to stay in a hotel for the weekend instead. For those individuals, it becomes a mini break of their own, while creating the space needed to support someone in crisis.
Judith Nalusiba, Registered Manager for Allenby Road, added: “Alongside our immediate response, the team works closely with the person to plan next steps. The aim is always to help them regain stability, rebuild confidence and move forward with their life. This also involves working together with other teams across Optalis and external organisations to get a good plan in place.”
Dudu Beeson, Registered Manager for Loddon Court reflects “I am thankful for the team as they are always open minded and ready to receive people and make them feel welcome and settled as much as possible.
Our service is built on kindness, teamwork and a genuine commitment to people. Whether support is planned weeks ahead or pulled together in a matter of hours, the care provided is thoughtful, responsive and human.”
