From Walks to Wellness: How Robert’s Passion for Cooking is Fuelling a Healthier Life
27 May 2025
Robert has been supported by the Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead (WAAM) Floating Support Service since late 2024. From the start, the team could see how much he enjoyed food; not just eating it but also learning how to make meals himself. Robert has a real enthusiasm for getting hands-on in the kitchen.
The team noticed that Robert wasn’t always eating enough to keep him going through the day. As someone who regularly walks long distances, often from his home in Maidenhead to his mum’s in Windsor, he needs plenty of energy. But he wasn’t always choosing foods that kept him full and fuelled.
In February, the team introduced Robert to Masha, a nutritional therapy practitioner. Masha has been working closely with Robert to help him learn more about how food supports his body, how to cook safely and confidently, and how to make meals that are both healthy and satisfying.
Robert has really enjoyed the sessions. He loves Masha’s friendly and positive approach, and always turns up with a big smile, ready to learn something new.
Together, they have been learning about balanced diets, and how to include more fibre and protein rich foods. The ingredients Robert uses in his meals are natural, avoiding any ultra-processed foods. His support worker, Decleark, has seen a big change, he has been impressed by how open Robert is to trying new foods and learning new skills.
During a recent visit, Robert was busy cooking a delicious Middle Eastern curry made with chickpeas, aubergine, butternut squash, and quinoa.
His verdict? “Good!” He has been trying dishes from all over the world—his favourite so far? “The seafood paella” he made last week.
It has been wonderful to see Robert become more confident in the kitchen, make healthier choices, and enjoy the whole process of learning. Next, he is considering growing his own herbs to use in his cooking.
