Optalis Supported Employment Travel Ambassador Programme among projects shortlisted for national awards
06 January 2026
Optalis Supported Employment is proud to share that our Travel Ambassador Programme, delivered in partnership with the Community Rail Partnership, has been shortlisted for the Empowering Diverse Groups category at the 2026 Community Rail Awards.
This recognition highlights the impact of a programme designed to build confidence, independence, and real work experience for adults with disabilities. Launched in 2024, the initiative supported five people to take on a paid role as Travel Ambassadors, working together to co‑design and plan accessible rail journeys along the Great Western Railway.
Jack adds, "It was really fun, I gained a lot of experience from it, and I got to talk with other fellow Travel Ambassadors who were on the trip as well. The overall aim was to show disabled people that you shouldn’t be scared to go on public transport, and we want to show that people should respect whatever disability you’ve got."
With guidance from the Optalis Supported Employment team, the Ambassadors researched routes, assessed accessibility at stations and destinations, and created practical “How to Guides” to help others travel with confidence. The project not only strengthened their workplace skills but also gave them a platform to influence positive change in accessible travel.
One member of the team explains, "I became a travel ambassador because I have a disability myself, and it’s really important to me that people feel accepted and able to go anywhere they want."
Donna Morgans, Head of Supported Employment Services explains, "Being shortlisted for this national award reflects the dedication of the Ambassadors, the commitment of our Employment Coaches, and the strength of our partnership with the Community Rail Partnership. It also reinforces our mission to create meaningful, inclusive employment opportunities that empower people to thrive."
The winners will be announced at the Community Rail Awards ceremony in Derby on 19 March 2026.
