Community Lives launch new interactive book club

Community Lives welcomed people with profound and multiple disabilities (PMLD) to a new interactive book club earlier this month. The Book Club launch is designed to allow those with PMLD to access a library and allow their imaginations to unfold by the narration of a story set around a theme. Unlike some Book Clubs the story is told using a variety of props, scents, sounds and using individuals to be a part of the story. Bringing together a host of sensory experiences, the interactive experience took the group on an unforgettable seaside themed adventure inspired by the famous book The Snail and the Whale, written by Julia Donaldson.

The story started with people arriving at the beach; sounds of the waves crashing, sun lotion being applied, exploring the golden sand and playing with a beach ball. The tale was brought to life in the Boyn Grove library through sensory exploration with Makaton, props, textures, fabrics and songs. This is the first of many sessions planned in the library, where people will be supported to enjoy a range of books in a way that works for them, bringing together the joy of reading and imagination.
