Satnam's Story

New skills,
friendships and
sharing culture in Lockdown

We spoke with Satnam to find out the skills he has developed and how he’s made new connections during lockdown.

Satnam has continued to attend the Day Centre, throughout the lockdown period. Without access to his usual support services he would have found life difficult.

“I like coming to Westmead, if I didn’t come here I would be very bored.”

Satnam has been using the time recently to help improve his English. Satnam said “I have been doing worksheets, English and Maths. These help me and keep me busy. My young grandson speaks English very well, I have a long way to go before I am as good as him.”

Satnam has also been kind and welcoming to the service users from other Optalis Day Services who are now accessing the centre. His Support Worker said “To mark the festival of Eid, Satnam bought ice creams for all of the customers, it was a lovely gesture.”

His support staff at the day centre have noticed a positive change in Satnam over recent weeks, he seems to be flourishing despite the pandemic and its effect on daily life.
